Detailed News and Events

1. The 2nd Big Heart Bike Ride - Rajasthan, India (15-25 November 2008)

Rajasthan, the Land of Kings, is India at its exotic and colourful best.

The Bike Ride starts with a visit to the Taj Mahal before setting off on a spectacular 370km journey through rural India, passing villages and temples along the way and staying in accommodation that ranges from campsites to an Indian palace.

The ride is organised by Classic Tours & Action for Charity, who organised the first, very successful Bike Heart Bike Ride.

Approximate Itinerary (may be subject to change)

1. (Sat. 15 Nov.) London - Delhi - Overnight flight, arriving on Sunday 16.

2. (Sun. 16) Delhi - Agra - Bus transfer: Delhi airport to Agra, stopping for lunch. Overnight at Laxmi Vilas Palace Hotel just outside Agra

3. (Mon. 17) Agra - A day to visit the Taj Mahal and complete the bike fitting before the start of the challenge

4. (Tues. 18) Agra - Khanua - camp site Bashawar (96km approx) - From the hotel straight into the colourful Rajasthan countryside, cycling through fields and small villages, then picking up secondary roads past villages and temples. Overnight camp nr. Bashawar village

5. (Wed. 19) Bashawar - Bhandarej (90km approx) - A great day of cycling through beautiful Rajasthan. Minor roads with little traffic, but many potholes!  Morning: flat roads with hills either side.  After lunch: cycle through one of the most scenic sections of the trip - Rajasthan rural life at its best.   After a long day, we reach Bhandarej village and overnight at the atmospheric Bhadrawadi Palace

6. (Thurs. 20) Bhandarej - Tahela Camp site (77km approx) - A challenging day with some short off-road parts. Cycle to c. 700 year old Abhenrai temple complex, then Chand Baori, an incredible step well, with about 11 visible levels of zigzagging steps. Morning's surroundings are green valleys with lush vegetation, ancient forts on hill tops.  Roads become bumpier and narrower, it becomes more arid and a bit hillier. We hope to see monkeys playing in the trees.  Camp on edge of Seriska Tiger Park

7. (Fri. 21) Tahela Camp - Doela camp site (78km approx) - Terrain is more arid, but nonetheless it is a spectacular day of cycling.  We see the ruins of an ancient city, after cycling on the edge of Seriska Park where we may spot some wild life.  Parts of the roads are in a bad condition. Overnight at the most spectacular camp site of the trip: in sand dunes next to the village of Doela with two ancient forts on the background hills

8. (Sat. 22) Doela Camp - Lal Mahal - Jaipur  (52km approx) - Last day of cycling.  Part of this area is arid, almost desert.  Morning: undulating road between sand dunes. Sometimes the asphalt just stops, a dirt road continues then asphalt returns.
Villages are very authentic and we pass a beautiful lake - home to some crocodiles!  We finish at lunchtime in Lal Mahal, then transfer c. 20km to Jaipur with time to explore. Overnight at the Jaipur Palace Hotel

9. (Sun. 23) Jaipur - A day in Jaipur, often known as the "Pink City" due to the salmon coloured facades of older buildings. Optional tour to the Amber Fort. Celebration meal.

10. (Mon. 24) Jaipur - Delhi - Transfer to Delhi and check in to our hotel. A day to explore Delhi or take an optional tour (lunch not included)

11. (Tues. 25 Nov.) Delhi - London - Early afternoon return flight to London

Report from the 1st Big Heart Bike Ride: Cycle Cuba (14-23 April 2007)

This 370 km cycle ride across the extraordinary island of Cuba visited several key sights, including Havana (one of the oldest cities in the Americas), Bay of Pigs, UNESCO World Heritage town of Trinidad with its Spanish architecture, Santa Clara (Che Guevara's statue) and the Sierra del Escambray mountains.

Report:  The riders returned from Cuba late on Sunday evening after a hugely successful challenge with lots of enthusiasm and commitment. The cycling was a real challenge for everyone – including some very good cyclists – with lots of hills and a mountain
on day 3, but the group really bonded and everyone felt they fully deserved all the sponsorship funds they have raised so far and determined to go out and raise more.

Thanks to everyone who participated, sponsored, supported and encouraged the riders!

Itinery:  Day 1: London to Havana  |  Day 2: Bay of Pigs  |  Day 3: Cienfuegos | Day 4: Trinidad  |  Day 5: Topes de Collantes  |
Day 6: Santa Clara  |  Day 7: Cienfuego - Havana  |  Day 8: Havana (tour)  |  Day 9/10: Havana - London  (link to Cuba.com ...)

Our charity was one of 5 heart charities taking part in the ride, arranged by Classic Tours & ActionForCharity.

Open Challenges (2009) NEW

Classic Tours run "Open Challenges", where participants can raise funds for any charity.

It is a good idea to plan a challenge about 8-12 months beforehand, so that you have time to prepare and seek sponsorship.

Cycle London to Paris: 26 – 29 June 2009

This long-weekend challenge between London and Paris covers around 300km in just three days. We cycle through undulating countryside towards the south coast, before crossing into France by ferry. From Dieppe we continue through sleepy Normandy villages with some challenging hills to conquer along the way, until we reach the Eiffel Tower in Paris.  Free time explore this beautiful city before taking the Eurostar home.

Registration fee: £150 (due on registration)  |  Recommended minimum sponsorship: £900 per person (due on 17.4.'09)

Trek the 3 Volcanoes: 24 – 29 September 2009

  • Colosseum in Rome
  • Explore Pompeii
  • Climb 3 famous volcanoes: Vesuvius, Stromboli and Mt. Etna

Enjoy some of Italy’s most spectacular scenery while scaling its three famous volcanoes. When we land in Italy we have time to visit one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, the Colosseum in Rome before reaching Sorrento. Our challenge starts with Vesuvius in southern Italy best known for the explosion that buried nearby Pompeii. It’s then on to Stromboli, a tough, steep trek to the summit of the volcano, which dominates this small island. The challenge culminates on the slopes of smouldering Mount Etna in Sicily, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Registration fee: £300  (due on registration)  |  Recommended Minimum sponsorship: £1,800 per person (due on 16.7.'09)

Please email us if you wish to participate.

Suggestions for competing in Marathons and other events

1. To raise money for the charity by running in a Marathon or other event we suggest you apply individually.

We do not have guaranteed places for April's London Marathon, due to its popularity, but you can apply individually (with about a 1 in 4 chance of being accepted each year);  other races (Triathlon, half marathon, 10K etc.) may have a better chance

2.  If you successful, please contact us - we can help with publicity through our website, sponsorship sheets etc.

3. Create your online sponsorship page, for online fundraising and provide information about yourself and your event

4. Archive events and pictures, 2000-2007 ...

Sershin competed in the gruelling mountain stage of the Tour De France on 16 July 2007 and has raised over £600

Enterprise at GWC, 2007

Students at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh took part in the Young Enterprise scheme and set up a company called “Crunch Ltd”, to sell canvas shopping bags that say “green at he©rt” and t-shirts that say “I © GWC” (using a heart symbol, as shown in the picture, below).

Crunch gave all their profits (about £900) to 2 charities, so half went to Tiny Tickers.

The idea behind this scheme is for students to work in teams to see how business works. They have to follow the process through brainstorming, negotiating with manufacturers, advertising and selling their product and distributing it. They then have the opportunity to sell their products at a trade fair at a local shopping centre.

Top Award, 24th March '07:  Crunch went to the awards evening on the 22nd March and came out with the top award, for the best company in Edinburgh, beating 23 other companies.  They then went on to the next stage of the competition, competing against all the best companies in Scotland in June.  Sadly they did not win, but they really learnt a lot from the experience.

Tiny Tickers is delighted to be one of the charities chosen by Crunch and wish the members of the team every success in the future.
